How to Play Shroomo: The Complete Rules & Strategy Guide
Shroomo takes about 60 seconds to learn and roughly 10 minutes a round — which is exactly why it works so well at pre-drinks. This guide covers the full setup, the core rules, the speciality cards, a few house rules and the sneaky tactics that keep the tower standing on your turn and topple it on someone else's.
What you need
- Your Shroomo deck (56 cards)
- One glass, half-filled with the drink of your choice — alcoholic or not
- 3–8 players and a flat-ish surface
Setting up
Fill a glass halfway with the drink of your choice and place it in the middle of the table. Shuffle the deck and set it face down on the table. Gather round so everyone can easily reach the glass — don't be shy. Choose someone to kick things off, then take turns going clockwise.
The core rules
1. Draw a card
On your turn, grab a card from the deck. If it's a speciality card, its effect takes action straight away (more on those below).
2. Balance it on the rim
Balance your card on the glass rim so that two corners are hanging off. The shroom-tower grows more precarious with every turn. Balance it successfully and the next player's up.
3. Topple it and you drink
Knock the tower and send it tumbling? Shroomo — you drink! And by “Shroomo law”, the player who topples the tower instantly loses the round. Reset the glass and start again. It's not about winning; it's about not being the one to lose.
Speciality cards
Scattered through the deck are speciality cards that flip the game on its head. Draw one and its effect happens immediately — and if several appear at once, their effects stack. Here's what to watch for:
- Balancer: a breather — just balance your card as normal, two corners hanging.
- Choose who's next: after placing your card, you pick who goes next. Target a wobbly player, or push play away from yourself.
- Weak hand: place your card using your non-dominant hand. Steady now.
- Extra card: the shroom skulls have spoken — draw and place one extra card.
- Skip: skip the next player's turn. Are they dodging danger or missing an easy chance?
- Reverse: flip the direction of play. Blessing or curse?
- Myco Master: make a rule that lasts until your next turn — “no hands”, “eyes shut”, the power's yours.
- 5 seconds: you have just five seconds to balance your card. The clock is ticking.
- Triple (only one in the deck): draw and place three extra cards. Good luck.
Winning tactics
- Place underhand. Balancing your card from below gives you steadier hands than dropping it from above.
- Mind the table. Remember Shroomo law — nudge the table or knock the tower and you're out, so watch your elbows and your drink.
- Raise the stakes on rivals. If an unsteady player is up after you, leave the tower in a bolder, trickier position.
- Two corners, every time. A card only counts with two corners hanging — a flat, flush placement doesn't buy you safety.
Playing alcohol-free
Shroomo can always be enjoyed alcohol-free — fill the glass with a soft drink, mocktail or water. Topple the tower and take a sip, or swap in a small forfeit. The wobble doesn't care what's in the glass, and sober nights get just as loud. Fancy your own twists? The Myco Master card lets any player invent a rule mid-game.

How many people can play Shroomo?
Anywhere from 3 to 8 players. The bigger the group, the louder — and wobblier — the tower gets.
How long does a round take?
About 10 minutes. You’ll swear it’s the last round, then immediately deal another.
Do I need anything besides the box?
Just one glass, half-filled with your drink of choice. Everything else — the 56 cards and rules — is in the box.
Can I play Shroomo without alcohol?
Yes. Fill the glass with a soft drink, mocktail or water and take a sip when you topple the tower, or use a forfeit instead. It plays exactly the same.
